TBK Travels - Conquering Bato Ni Ningning, again

Back in 2021, 20 days before I retired from Bapco on 14.2.21, I displayed this poster on my office wall. It attracted much interest and so here is the back story behind it:

"Bato ni Ningning is an iconic rock on top of a hill found in Barangay Sto. Niño in San Vicente, Palawan. The name was coined from a TV show featuring a character named “Ningning” and how this area with the huge boulder became her playground"

I took the photo of the "Iconic Rock star of San Vicente" back ion 2020 when I was staying at the Turublien Long Beach Inn and Bar on long beach with my friend Kuya Ran. He suggested we go up to the viewpoint and we set off in my Toyota Wigo hire car. Whilst the road starts off flat it soon becomes steep, muddy and extremely dangerous to drive up in a car!

The Alimanguan highway (yes that is its real name) that leads to the track up to the viewpoint.

These photos were taken this trip when Chester and I walked up the hill

In 2020 my friend, Kuya Ran, suggested we drive up the hill in my car. It was one of the scariest drives in my life, steep, narrow, big drops on either side, and lots of loose gravel. We finally made it and when we left, he suggested we drive up further! I declined. He later revealed the only time he had been up there was on a Motorbike!

In 2021 I was going to take my friend Alvin up there when we stayed at Victoria Beach House. I arranged a 4x 4 to collect us but he never turned up so we went to secret beach instead.

This time I decided to park at the bottom and walk up but it was nearly noon, very hot and humid, and Chester had other ideas.

He jumped into some foliage under a tree in the shade and stayed there. There was a deep ditch under the foliage so I could not easily get him out and continued up the hill alone. I remembered that you had to pay (25 pesos) to visit the site and that they sold water and snacks, so I had taken my wallet. However, I omitted to check what notes I had in my wallet and, as I had just been to an ATM, it was all 1000-peso notes, and the lady had no change! I just had enough for a much-needed bottle of water for me and one for Chester.

The View from Bato Ni Nining of Long Beach, 14 km of white sand

I walked down to the rock but there were two Pinoy young couples up there taking 100's of photos for Instagram, Tik Tok and their Vlog. I listened to their annoying laughter and several versions of " Hi guys, and welcome to my Vlog". I decided not to wait for them to come down and just took a couple of photos of the amazing view before heading back down the hill. It was only when I checked the sound quality on my own vlog that I realized it was so windy you could not hear what I was saying!

From this viewpoint it is easy to see why Palawan has just won another award- On 10th November a UK Travel magazine, Wanderlust, hailed "Palawan ‘Most Desirable Island’ in their 21st Travel Awards"

Previously Conde Nast Travel (CNT) included the Philippines in its list of the 40 Most Beautiful Countries in the World in June of this year, lauding the unique cave system of Puerto Princesa Underground River. In July 2022, Travel + Leisure magazine included Palawan on its list of the worlds 25 best islands. Palawan, along with Cebu and Boracay are among the most popular tourist destinations in the Philippines.

Having spent 12 years in the flat sandy dessert of the Middle East I love the hills and greenery of Palawan. I decided to give up on my attempt to climb the rock and headed back down the path to see how Chester was. He was happy to see me and drank the water then I lifted him out of the ditch just as some birds landed on the path. He raced off after them! At the bottom of the car the water I had left in his bowl had gone but I had another bottle in the car which he lapped up before having another rest in the shade of a tree.

Finally, I persuaded him to get in the car and we went back to the hotel. I then realised I had got sunburnt on my walk!

As well as getting brown I walked
7,195 steps bring my total for the 5 nights in Alimanguan to around 30,000 steps. The next day I went to Long Beach with my friend Darwin to take some more photos for Chester's 2023 calendar- we were filming the October page and our theme was Halloween. The Long Beach was completely deserted!

It is sad to think the peace and tranquility in this area will be destroyed forever when Megaworld starts building their coastal town Paragua.

One of Megaworld's many adverts for Paruga- note the single track road!

"Megaworld earmarks P40-B to develop 462-hectare 'Eco-Tourism Township' in Palawan

Property giant Megaworld is developing 462 hectares of beachfront and inland properties in San Vicente, Palawan into an ‘eco-tourism township’, as the company remains optimistic on the fast recovery of the country’s tourism industry after the pandemic.

To be named Paragua Coastown, this 27th Megaworld township will feature some of the most beautiful beaches along the coastline of San Vicente, including Port Barton, one of the most famous tourist attractions of the town known for its 22 small islands. It is also strategically located within a few minutes away from the San Vicente Airport, which serves regular flights to and from Manila and Clark. "

Paragua Coastown will be highlighted by hotels and resorts, health and wellness sanctuaries, cultural center, educational institutions, a boutique hotel district, a shophouse district, as well as residential developments such as private villas, serviced apartments, themed residential villages, and a mangrove reserve park.

Sadly, I fear the view from Bato Ni Nining will be changed forever!
