TBK Travels to amazing Bangladesh - part three

When I showed Abhi part one and two he reminded me I missed of a day of touring that we did outside Dhaka so I asked him to write it up and select some of his photos for this Blog

Among the places we visited were:

Ahsan Manzil

The British Kabayan at the Pink Palace

Ahsan Manzil (Bengali: আহসান মঞ্জিল, Ahsan Monjil) was the official residential palace and seat of the Nawab of Dhaka.  The building is situated at Kumartoli along the banks of the Buriganga River in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Construction was started in 1859 and was completed in 1872. It was constructed in the Indo-Saracenic Revival architecture. It has been designated as a national museum.

It is also pink and you know I like everything pink!

Special thanks to everyone who supported the Think Pink campaign in Bahrain in October. Next it's MOvember!

Who says I always wear pink!

Back in Bangladesh another place we visited was the Dhakeshwari Temple. According to Wikipedia:

"Dhakeshwari National Temple (Bengaliঢাকেশ্বরী জাতীয় মন্দিরromanizedÐhakeshshori Jatio Mondir) is a Hindu temple in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is state-owned, giving it the distinction of being Bangladesh's 'National Temple'. The name "Dhakeshwari" (ঢাকেশ্বরী Ðhakeshshori) means "Goddess of Dhaka". Since the destruction of Ramna Kali Mandir in 1971 by the Pakistan Army during the Bangladesh Liberation War, the Dhakeshwari Temple has assumed status as the most important Hindu place of worship in Bangladesh.[1] It is also the largest Hindu temple in Bangladesh"

As well as being visited by Neil Porter the temple has been visited by other famous people like Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi who prayed at the temple during his official visit to Bangladesh on 7 June 2015. He was given a model of the goddess Dhakeshwari by the temple authorities. In 2018, the Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina visited the Dhakeshwari Temple and announced gifting of adjacent land to the temple authorities. Previously, the temple lost a lot of its property to land grabbing.

We also went to Sardar house. This is part of Sonargaon  which means "Golden Village". One of the tribal groups of people named Shornobhusitah lived in this area. Literally meaning 'dressed up with gold' and signifying that all the people's men and women used to adorn themselves with gold. This was a thriving administrative, commercial and maritime centre of Bengal. This place was described by world famous globe trotter including, Ibn Battuta (from Morocco), Ralph Fitch (from England), Ma Huan (from China) and Niccolo de Conti from (from Venice, Italy) as a thriving headquarters for trade and commerce of eastern province of Bengal.

But most of all I loved our walks in the various parks and in the University grounds. It was just like being back in England with the sun shining through the trees and the birds and squirrels running about.

The British Kabayan walking in the park ( I am sure I took more than one tee shirt!)

My favourite place to hang out was the Art College at Dhaka University where Abhi and I found a mirror to take a selfie!

See- Blue tee shirt, and Abhi resplendent in shirt and Tie as usual

My special thanks to Abhi for being such a good tour guide on both my trips to Bangladesh, and for taking ( and sending me for the blog) all the excellent photos. He also researched the places we went, arranged transport and acted as interpreter when we had our guided tours. I am looking forward to returning to Dhaka, and finally visiting Cox's Bazar and Chittagong on my next visit to India and Bangladesh in 2024 once I get settled in the Philippines in 2022 ( inshallah) and visit all of Palawan and then visit some of the other 7000 Philippine Islands I have not been to yet in 2023

Until then this is the British Kabayan signing out
